Dr Andrea Smith lives with metastatic breast cancer (MBC), having been diagnosed with de novo metastatic in 2016. Andrea is a researcher at the Daffodil Centre at the University of Sydney, and her diagnosis has meant that her research now focuses on improving supportive care for people with metastatic cancer, especially metastatic breast cancer. Andrea combines her research with advocacy. She chairs BCNA’s MBC Lived Experience Reference Group and is a member of BCNA’s Consumer Advisory Group. Andrea is a member of the National Breast Cancer Foundation’s Consumer Advisory Panel and involved as a consumer with the Victorian Comprehensive Cancer Centre.
Dr Naama Carlin is a sociologist and academic. She was diagnosed with triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) at 29 weeks pregnant and received her first dose of chemotherapy at 30 weeks pregnant. Naama had to crowdfund $60k for Pembrolizumab/Keytruda and has advocated for the drug to be on the PBS for early-stage TNBC; it is through this that she connected with BCNA. She is passionate about improving intersecting medical systems such as the neonatal and oncology units and improving diagnosis and care for young women with breast cancer.
