Not all types of LCIS need treatment. It is usually not recommended if you have ‘classic LCIS’ (the most common type).
If you have pleomorphic or florid LCIS, some form of treatment is likely. This is because the risk of breast cancer in future is higher with these types of LCIS.
We explain the different types at About LCIS.
Your doctor will talk to you about the best options for your individual situation. The goal is to reduce the risk of invasive breast cancer developing in the future.
These options may include:
Breast cancer is unlikely to develop from classic LCIS cells. If you do not have any other abnormal changes in the breast, you usually do not need treatment for LCIS.
This is because the LCIS remains inside the breast lobule. Even if you don’t have any treatment, it does not usually spread beyond the lobule and does not become invasive breast cancer.
Your doctor will probably recommend regular checks for the long-term. These may include:
If you have LCIS you may consider participating in a clinical trial. These explore new treatments for preventing breast cancer. Ask your doctor whether you might be suitable.
