While you recover from any breast cancer surgery or breast reconstruction, you may have some pain and limited movement.
Physical exercise and movement are important to help you recover more quickly. Follow any advice from your treating team around nutrition and physical activity.
Our members who have been through breast cancer have shared their suggestions.
- Buy a longer cable to charge your phone, so you don’t have to reach or stretch.
- Buy slippers you can easily slip your feet into, without needing to bend down and use your hands.
- Hire a reclining chair to sleep in. This may be more comfortable for the first few nights, especially after reconstruction.
- Hire or buy a ‘grab stick’ or ‘easy reacher’ with a claw on the end, to reduce arm movements.
- Wear pyjamas and clothes that have buttons up the front.
- Support your arms when you are in a chair or in bed. Pillows or cushions such as the Zonta breast care cushion can help.
- Wear singlet tops, a zip-up bra, or ask your healthcare professional to order a free and specially designed Berlei bra and soft form.
- If friends and family want to help, suggest cleaning, washing and lawn mowing, as you can’t do these for a while.
- If you have wound drains when you leave hospital, a shopping bag with a long strap makes them easier to carry. Ask your breast care nurses - they often have these, made and donated by volunteers.
- Use a small pillow to protect you from the seatbelt in the car.
- Take pain relief when needed; ice packs can also help with the pain.
- Move items to lower shelves in the kitchen and bathroom if you use them often.
- Wear any supportive underwear or clothing your treating team has recommended.
- Avoid having to lift pots and pans by using a meal service or nutritious frozen meals.
