After a diagnosis of early breast cancer or DCIS, your doctor may recommend a mastectomy. This is surgery to remove all breast tissue in one breast ('single' or 'unilateral' mastectomy) or both breasts ('double' or 'bilateral' mastectomy). Sometimes, this includes removing the nipple.
