Airport screening and breast prostheses

It is safe to fly with a removable breast prosthesis inside your bra. You can wear it through airport security, but it will show up in a body scanner.

The rules about liquids, gels and aerosols don't apply to silicone or gel prostheses.

If you wear a breast prosthesis, staff should:

• treat you in a sensitive way
• protect your privacy.

They should not ask you to:

• remove your breast prosthesis if you are wearing it
• lift your clothing to show any prosthesis you are wearing.

You have the right to ask to be screened in a private area and by a female security officer.

Tips to be more comfortable when travelling

In case airport staff ask you about your prosthesis, you may wish to:

• carry a letter from your doctor that states you have a prosthesis, which you are wearing or carrying
• tell staff before they scan you, so they can treat you discreetly
• ask to speak privately with a female staff member.
