Breast Cancer Network Australia (BCNA) proudly celebrates Cancer Nurses Day by shining a spotlight on the vital contributions of cancer nurses through the story of Kerry Patford, Chief Nurse at the McGrath Foundation with over 35 years of nursing experience.
Kerry, who joined the McGrath Foundation in 2009, has dedicated her career to making a difference in the lives of those experiencing breast cancer. With a unique understanding of the physical, emotional, and psychological challenges faced by patients and their families, Kerry emphasises the importance of comprehensive care and support at every stage of the cancer experience.
It takes a team of specialists to provide the comprehensive care that people living with cancer deserve ... BCNA is an integral part of that team.
"Being a McGrath breast care nurse is a career highlight," says Kerry. "Every day, I feel like I'm making a real difference - whether it's helping patients navigate their next appointment, providing emotional support, or distributing BCNA's My Care Kits to people who have undergone breast cancer surgery. It's about making people feel supported in every aspect of their lives."
Kerry's passion for her role was ignited by a deeply personal experience. After watching a close friend’s experience with breast cancer at just 31 years old, with small children, Kerry realised the profound impact that comprehensive breast cancer care can have. "Witnessing the support received by my friend during her treatment was a career changing moment for me. It opened my eyes to a new career path, and I knew from then on that being a breast care nurse was what I was going to do."
In her role at the McGrath Foundation, Kerry has been instrumental in providing much-needed care and support to people affected by cancer across Australia, regardless of their location. She emphasises the importance of a multidisciplinary approach to cancer care, where healthcare professionals work together to meet the diverse needs of people experiencing breast cancer and their loved ones.
"It takes a team of specialists to provide the comprehensive care that people living with cancer deserve," Kerry explains. "BCNA is an integral part of that team, helping to ensure that no matter where you live – rural, regional, or urban – the quality of care remains consistent. Working alongside BCNA allows us to deliver patient-centred care that truly makes a difference."
Kerry's dedication to her work is matched by her humility and compassion. When asked about her hopes for the future, she simply wishes for "more kindness in the world". For those starting their careers in oncology, Kerry advises taking every opportunity to learn, even in fields outside their primary practice. "Learning from people is a privilege," she says.
BCNA is honoured to work alongside incredible breast care nurses like Kerry, who are at the heart of cancer care in Australia. This Cancer Nurses Day, we recognise and celebrate the invaluable contributions of cancer nurses who, like Kerry, deliver exceptional care every day.
