As we celebrate Cancer Nurses Day, Breast Cancer Network Australia (BCNA) proudly honours the exceptional contributions of cancer care nurses who play a crucial role in supporting those living with cancer. BCNA celebrates the remarkable work of Kerry Patford, Chief Nurse at McGrath Foundation, and Jenny Gilchrist, a breast oncology nurse practitioner at Macquarie University Hospital. Both volunteer with BCNA, providing clinical expertise as members of our Strategic Advisory Group.
Their expertise, compassion, and unwavering commitment ensure that patients receive not only the best clinical care but also the emotional and psycho-social support crucial to navigating their cancer experience.
Vicki Durston, BCNA’s Director of Policy, Advocacy & Support Services, expressed deep admiration for the tireless dedication of cancer nurses. “Kerry and Jenny are the backbone of breast cancer care in Australia. Their expertise, compassion, and unwavering commitment ensure that patients receive not only the best clinical care but also the emotional and psycho-social support crucial to navigating their cancer experience.”
In conjunction with this celebration, BCNA applauds the Australian Government’s recent commitment to funding 100 new cancer care nurses as part of the Australian Cancer Nursing and Navigation Program (ACNNP) as part of the newly launched Australian Cancer Plan.
Durston highlights that this landmark investment marks significant progress for cancer care in Australia and is largely the result of the advocacy efforts by nursing organisations, professional bodies, as well as BCNA.
